Danish Refugee Council (DRC) is an international non-governmental organization that provides assistance and promotes durable solutions for refugees and internally displaced people, based on humanitarian principles and human rights.
Danish Refugee Council is a humanitarian actor in Tanzania. Since 2015, as part of the Burundian Refugee Response in Tanzania, DRC works in the sectors of camp management, Community-Based Protection, livelihoods, protection, WASH, General Food Distributions, and shelter/ small infrastructure in Nduta camps. DRC has been implementing Camp management, Community Based Protection, and Livelihood projects in Nyarugusu refugee camp since January 2020.
Since March 2021, DRC is implementing an Energy and Environment Project in refugee-hosting communities and Nduta, and Nyarugusu refugee camps.
Name of the Position: - Economic Recovery Interns – Energy and Environment
Reports to: - Economic Recovery Officer
Supervise: - Incentive staff and Village Agents.
Duty Station: - Kibondo (2 interns) and Kasulu (2 interns) –
with frequent travel to respective refugee camps and host communities.
An Economic Recovery Intern – Energy and Environment, under the management and supervision of the Economic Recovery Officer and in close collaboration with UNHCR and the camp-based government coordination bodies will be responsible for supporting the implementation of livelihoods activities in the refugee camp and host community. The Economic Recovery intern is therefore expected to be flexible to work in different locations throughout the program.

Tasks and responsibilities of the position
Participate in ensuring targets are met under DRC’s agreement with donors, to be accountable to the stated goals of the program.
Participate in the provision of training and technical support to program participants with a specific focus on energy and environment components. Participate in ensuring documentation and provide inputs for reporting on implementation progress. Participate in suggesting viable project ideas for future interventions.
Participate in Monitoring, Evaluation, and Reporting Activities.
Work with established community-based structures in the community and be solution-oriented in terms of challenges arising from individual activities and the program as a whole.
Provide inputs for new sustainable livelihood initiatives/proposals and fundraising relating to emergency and longer-term responses.
Contribute to the documentation of lessons learned and ensure that is reflected in program planning and decision making.
Comply with the Core Humanitarian Standards (CHS) and the DRC’s Code of Conduct (CoC);
Provide timely and quality field visit reports to the assigned supervisor.
Foster and maintain excellent working relationships with key humanitarian actors – local and international, including government authorities and private sectors.
Liaise closely with other DRC sectors such as; Community Based Protection, protection, and camp management to ensure productive coordination and smooth implementation of the program activities.
Requirements
University Degree in Forestry, Natural Resources Management, Renewable Energy, Environmental Science and Management, Agriculture, and other related fields.
Passion for developing a career in the following areas;
Access to alternative sources of energy, specifically on bio-briquettes production
Development and management of tree nurseries.
Afforestation and sustainable forest harvesting techniques.
Forest and natural resources management policies, guidelines, and best practices.
Formation and strengthening of Natural Resources/Environmental/Community Based Forest Management Committees at the village level.
Land restoration through resilience design approaches.
Sustainable agriculture practices include; Climate Smart Agriculture (CSA), Good Agriculture Practices (GAP), and Resilience farming approaches like Permaculture, Agroecology, and Agroforestry among others.
Developing and implementing environmentally friendly Income Generating Activities (IGAs).
Raising public awareness on forest management and/or environmental conservation.
Land use planning at village/ward level
Market-based interventions on access to sustainable energy
Implement a program on cooking energy-efficient stoves
Computer literacy (Microsoft Word and Excel).
Ability to communicate in English and Swahili. The ability to communicate in Kiha and/or Kirundi is a plus.
Excellent interpersonal and problem-solving skills, creativity, and flexibility.
Comfortable in a multi-cultural environment, flexible and able to handle pressure well and engage with community members openly, and maintain confidentiality and respect.
