About Occupational Safety and Health Authority (OSHA)
Occupational Safety and Health Authority (OSHA) is a Government Agency under the Prime Minister’s Office (Labour, Youth, Employment and Persons with Disability). Occupational Safety and Health Authority (OSHA) is responsible to protect workers against potential hazards at workplaces that can cause occupational diseases and accidents. This duty is exercised through enforcing the implementation of the Occupational Health and Safety Act No. 5 of 2003.
Occupational Safety and Health Authority (OSHA)’s history goes back to 2001 when it was established as part of Government Programme to Improve Service Provision to the public which was implemented under the Executive Agencies Act No. 30 of the 1997
Occupational Safety and Health Authority (OSHA) has been established as a Government Agency for regulating occupational safety and health in Tanzania Mainland. OSHA has the responsibility to ensure that employees work in safer environments which is free from occupational diseases and accidents as per laid down procedures and standards.

Occupational Safety and Health Authority (OSHA) has four main responsibilities including;
- To enforce the Occupational Health and Safety Act No. 5 of 2003
- To advise the government on workplace safety and health issues as well as on policies, regulations and guidelines for safety and health management in the country including ratification of International Conventions on safety and health issues
- Increase awareness of stakeholders engagement in matters related to Safety and Health by providing a variety of training, including providing professional advice to stakeholders
- Conducting various researches concerning occupational safety and health issues in order to advise government on how to implement the mentioned legislation.
In order to achieve the stated objectives, Occupational Safety and Health Authority (OSHA) carry out various activities including:
- Â Â Â Registering workplaces;
- Â Â Â Conducting General Inspections and performing specific inspections, e.g. electrical safety inspections, pressure vessels and inspection of Lifting Appliances;
- Â Â Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Risk assessment;
- Â Â Scrutinization of workplace drawings to ensure that they meet minimum OHS standards;
- Â Â Conducting accident investigations;
- Â Â To conduct industrial hygiene surveys and measurements as well as;
- Â Â Â To provide technical advice on occupational health and safety issues.

Nursing Officers DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
i.To prepare articles and manuals on Occupational Hygiene and Ergonomics safety
ii.To provide inputs in the preparation of Business plan, Strategic plan and other policy formulation in relation to Occupational Hygiene and Ergonomics Safety.
iii.To prepare and submit reports timely
iv.To carry out general walk through workplace inspections for the purpose of the establishment of compliance status
v.To carry out specific Occupational Hygiene and Ergonomics inspections and recommend remedial measures for identified problems
vi.To carry out work environment measurements (Thermal stress, noise, light, dust, gases, fumes, aerosol, mist, vapour, radiation, indoor air quality, ventilation, efficiency etc.)
vii.To facilitate Occupational Hygiene and Ergonomics trainings to workers and management
viii.To operate and maintain work environment measuring equipment
ix.To provide input for and Occupational Hygiene and Ergonomics surveys and researches
x.To recognize, evaluate and control workplace hazards
xi.To provide input to Public Relations Office on Occupational Hygiene and Ergonomics issues to be delivered to media, Government agencies, workers and management
xii.To interpret scientific data collected during investigations and recommend appropriate control methods
xiii.To operate technical equipment for obtaining samples
xiv.To conduct follow up inspections to ensure corrective measures have been implemented
xv.To review relevant documents from workplace
xvi.To review existing and current Occupational safety and health literature

QUALIFICATION AND EXPERIENCE
Holder of Bachelor Degree in Environmental Health Sciences, Industrial Hygiene, Environmental engineering, Occupational and Environmental Health or equivalent from a recognized Institution.
