NECTA’s History in summary
The Curriculum and Examinations Section of the Ministry of Education was responsible for all examinations after Tanzania Mainland withdrew from the East African Examinations Council in 1971, and before NECTA was created by law in 1973. Exams became NECTA’s duty in line with the legislation with the foundation of the organization.
The Curriculum remained under the Ministry of Education and the University College of Dar es Salaam until 1975, when it was transferred to the newly founded, independent Institute of Curriculum Development (ICD), which was renamed the Tanzania Institute of Education in 1993. (TIE).
Mr. P. P Gandye, who was recruited in 1972 and subsequently promoted as Executive Secretary in 1994, was among the original staff members of NECTA, who were hired between 1972 and 1976. Other employees continued to be hired, particularly when NECTA’s headquarters relocated from the Ministry of Education to Kijitonyama, near Mwenge. NECTA now employs about 250 people.
NECTA was founded in 1992.

The Establishing of NECTA
The Parliamentary Act No. 21 of 1973 established the National Examinations Council of Tanzania (NECTA). NECTA is a government institution. NECTA is in charge of putting on all of Tanzania's National Examinations.
The decision to set up NECTA came after Tanzania Mainland left the East African Examinations Council (EAEC) in April 1971 to run its own exams. In 1970, Zanzibar left the EAEC. Before the pullout, between 1968 and 1971, Tanzania took part in the Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate's foreign Secondary School Examinations with the East African Syndicate. Before that, the Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate did the exams on its own. Back then, the School Certificate and Higher School Certificate Examinations were run by the Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate. African students took their first School Certificate exams in 1947, and their first Higher School Certificate exams in 1960.
The Objective of NECTA Form Six Exams (ACSEE Exams)
The goals of NECTA form six exams (ACSEE exams) is to see if the learner has the knowledge and skills to go on to further education, like diploma and degree programs, and to see how well they can use the skills they've learned to meet social, political, economic, and technological challenges for their own development and for the development of the country as a whole. So, candidates at this level should be able to do a wide range of things well in the following areas: knowledge, comprehension, application, analysis, synthesis, and evaluation.
Candidates who want to sit for NECTA form six exams (ACSEE exams) must meet certain requirements.
NECTA Form six exams (ACSEE exams) are given to people who have finished two years of high school (at the advanced level studies) and earned three credits at the CSEE level.
