Your UCSBnetID is an unique identification number that will stay with you for as long as you are a student at UCSB and it does not change.
All new students are supposed to have a UCSBnetID and a UCSB U-Mail account to access all matters related to UCSB University. You can use your UCSBnetID to log in to most online services, like UCSB GOLD and GauchoSpace.
University email, or U-Mail, is the email service for students at UCSB. All official correspondence is sent to U-Mail. Once U-Mail address is activated, all University businesses will be sent to it, and students are expected to check it often. You can send your U-Mail messages to another account if you want to.
Your U-Mail address is your UCSBnetID followed by @ucsb.edu, and the password is the same as your UCSBNetID password.
After you've submitted your SIR, it will take a few days before you can use your UCSBnetID and U-Mail account. Sign in to the UCSB Identity Manager to do this. Your UCSBnetID and U-Mail account will both be turned on by the Identity Manager service. If you have trouble activating your account, you can get help from the UCSB Student Support Center.

To activate your UCSBnetID, follow the following steps;
Step #1. Go to im.ucsb.edu/idm/manage to turn on your UCSBnetID.
Step #2. Choose "A New Student or a Current Student with a Perm Number."
- Â Under "Last Name," write your family name or surname.
- Â Your perm number should have seven digits and NO hyphens or dashes.
- Â Your date of birth should be written like this: MM/DD/YYYY.
- Â Use 0000 if you don't have a Social Security Number.
-  UCSB Extension or Open University students should choose a radio button written "Students enrolled through UCSB Extension/Open University." should enter their family/surname under "Last Name,". Their birth date should be written as MM/DD/YYYY.Â
