What is the new SPIRE interface?

The new homepage will be tile-based. The primary change for staff and students will be the availability of tiles for quicker navigation to some pages.

Students will only be using tiles to navigate instead of the Main Menu that is used in the existing SPIRE interface. All pages students use have been re-designed to have a more up-to-date look and be mobile-friendly.

The look and functionality of faculty & staff pages will not change. Staff & faculty will have tiles for easy access to the most commonly used pages.  In addition, all pages currently available can be accessed via the Navigator icon in the new interface. The pages in the Navigator will be in the same order as you are accustomed to seeing in the current Main Menu in SPIRE.

When will this change occur?

SPIRE will be upgraded the weekend of Oct 22 and available by Monday, Oct 24 at 8 am.

Will my existing favorites be available in the new interface?

Faculty/Staff favorites will be imported into the new interface. You will not need to re-add your favorites.

Students will no longer have access to favorites. All of the existing student pages will be available on tiles. Student navigation will be much easier than it is in the current version of SPIRE, lessening the need to favorite pages.

I'm an employee and a student or I have more than one role. Will I need two separate login IDs for SPIRE?

You will not need a separate login ID. To access your secondary role, check the Use Alternate Role checkbox on the SPIRE login page, then log in with your NetID and password. You can change your primary role once you log into SPIRE. Select the Profile tile, then under Access & Privacy, select Preferred SPIRE Role. Here you can change your preferred role. The preferred role will be your default role.

Is the SPIRE login page going to change?

The login page will not be changing when we start using the new interface. However, it will be changing in a few months when SPIRE starts using single sign-on authentication. You will be informed of the details well in advance.

Will I be able to add or customize tiles?

No, you will not be able to add or customize tiles.

Where will I be able to find documentation in SPIRE?

Once the upgrade is complete, all SPIRE documentation will be found in our Knowledge Base.

Will I be able to revert back to the legacy (current) user interface?

No, once the upgrade is complete, there will not be an option to revert to the legacy (current) interface.

How will the new SPIRE interface affect Faculty/Staff members?

The home page will be tile-based, and the most common pages used will be available by clicking on a tile.

For example:
  • Pages used by instructors will be available on the tile labeled Faculty Center.
  • Advisor pages under the Advisor Center tile.
  • Academic Records/SPIRE A pages are in the Academic Records tile.
  • CAPS and other course-related pages are part of the Course Maintenance tile.
In addition, all pages currently in the Main Menu (including favorites) will be available through the same navigation structure as the previous interface by using the Navigator icon. Faculty and staff pages will have the same look and functionality as the legacy interface.

How should I ask questions or voice my concerns regarding the new interface upgrade?

Please feel free to email [email protected].
