5. MY.OSU.EDU: PREFERRED NAME/NAME CHANGE PROCESS
One of the features of the Self-Service site at my.osu.edu is the Identity Details page, which displays your official university record of identity information. A preferred first name (nickname) field and the preferred last name field are available for you to specify a name, other than your legal first name, that you are known by.
The university recognizes that many of its students and employees use names other than their legal names to identify themselves. As long as the use of the different name is not for the purpose of misrepresentation, the university offers the opportunity to use preferred names in addition to legal names.
Inappropriate use of preferred names, including but not limited to misrepresentation, may be cause for revoking/denying the request. Preferred name changes are not a substitution for legal name changes.

No, your active username (name.#) will be the previously assigned username. For example, if your legal name was lee and your username was lee.999999, and you get married and legally change your name within HR or the university’s Student Information System, a new username will be automatically generated for you. You can then go to my.osu.edu and set your preferred last name to Lee, and your active username will be set to lee.999999. After this an email will be sent that asks you to confirm that the username you will begin to use will be lee.999999.

Preferred first names will NOT be used for any official university documents such as transcripts or degrees. In addition, preferred first names will NOT be used for human resources or OSU Wexner Medical Center systems.
