The DStv Streama, which has been long-awaited by MultiChoice customers, will go on sale in South Africa on October 1, 2022.
Thursday, at the company’s 2022 Media Showcase, MultiChoice South Africa CEO Nyiko Shiburi announced the official launch date.
The DStv Streama is a small streaming box that can handle 4K video with HDR 10 and virtual surround sound with Dolby Atmos.
Users can connect the Streama to the Internet by plugging in an Ethernet cable at the back or by using the built-in Wi-Fi 5 receiver to connect wirelessly.
The Streama comes with a tiny remote control similar to those seen with Xiaomi’s Mi TV Box or Mi TV Stick – MultiChoice’s competitors.
The remote has Netflix, Showmax, and YouTube shortcut buttons. There is also a microphone button for voice input.
The operating system of the box is based on the open-source RDK platform, which is utilized by other well-known broadcasters such as Sky.
Its design is identical to that of the DStv streaming app, with minor improvements to the TV Guide.
It also features applications for MultiChoice’s Showmax streaming service and SuperSport, as well as third-party streaming apps like as Netflix, Disney+, Amazon Prime Video, YouTube, and YouTube Kids, which are also available on the Explora Ultra.
Customers may sign up for DStv bundles directly through the box and add subscriptions to their accounts for some of the third-party services.
The DStv Streama was unveiled in August 2020, more than two years ago. MultiChoice stated at the time that its debut date will be disclosed “in due course.”
For a long period, it remained silent on any concrete launch plans, fueling rumors that the product had grown obsolete.
Shiburi informed MyBroadband in November 2021 that the worldwide chip scarcity contributed to the Streama’s delay since they had to reconsider the chipset to put in the device.
An engineer who worked on the Streama told MyBroadband that they upgraded from an Amlogic to a Realtek chip, which necessitated recertification.
Shiburi also stated that the Streama was delayed to guarantee that it could compete with the greatest in the world from the start.
“This box needs to be extremely high-end,” Shiburi said.
“You’re entering a market that already has a lot of media devices.” You want to ensure that when this product is out, it is of the highest quality.”
However, during MultiChoice’s financial results presentation for the fiscal year 2021/2022, officials officially disclosed the box will launch by September 30, 2022.
